In 2019, life looked a LOT different. Right before quarantine and a worldwide pandemic, I started a pet sitting and dog walking business. The idea was first proposed to me in 2017 by an acquaintance. At the time, I had a full-time job in a different industry and was pet sitting to earn some extra cash on the side because I was saving up for a move to Philadelphia. This acquaintance brought up the idea because they appreciated the quality of care I was providing to their pet and observed the need for exceptional pet care in their neighborhood.
Little did I know at the time, this would soon become my full-time passion project and introduce me to the industry I’ve wanted to work in since I was in elementary school. I still remember being asked the ultimate anxiety-producing question for little Tanya “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Yuck. It still makes me cringe. But because I was expected to give an answer, I usually said “veterinarian” or “marine biologist” because I loved animals and wanted to help them.
I believe I have a special connection with animals. Maybe it’s my ability to understand and communicate with them that nurtured this bond. Over my lifetime, I’ve taken the time to educate myself on animal behavior and perhaps that’s been my biggest asset. It’s a chicken-and-egg scenario: did I love and respect animals from the start and that developed my interest in learning about them? Or did my interest in the topic gradually intensify this bond and love for them?
Fast forward to 2023, four years after I legally formed The Comfy Pets, I now have the best clients and am one step closer to the life I imagine for myself. I owe it all to my clients…they are truly the best out there. They are loyal, understanding, communicative, and appreciative of my work. How else would you describe someone who trusts you with their fur babies AND returns to business-as-usual after you go on a 3-month hiatus while you’re on a rescue-adoption mission in your home country of Costa Rica? [more on this later] The. Absolute. Best.
So, for my very first blog post, I want to dedicate this birthday celebration to the Comfy Fam. I would not be here without you and I am so thankful I started this business so I could care for your furry ones. Everyday I learn something new about animals, about owning and running a successful business, about myself, and about life in general. With each new blog entry, I hope to share all of the valuable lessons I’ve gained and continue to absorb through this business. I consider myself to be an advocate for animals and it’s my goal to ensure all pets are living their best, comfiest lives.
